2nd Christian Cemetery, cemetery in Odesa, Ukraine

The 2nd Christian Cemetery is a burial ground in Odesa, Ukraine, spread over a large open area with simple paths, grass, and old weathered headstones. It contains both local graves and a section for foreign soldiers who died during conflicts near the city.

The cemetery was established long ago as a Christian burial ground for residents of Odesa and the surrounding area. Over time it also received the remains of foreign soldiers, including one grave linked to a soldier of the South Wales Borderers who died near the end of the Second World War.

On local days of remembrance, you can see people clearing weeds from family plots and placing cut flowers on stones, sometimes leaving small oil lamps to burn. The sections for foreign soldiers use simple markers and occasionally multilingual signs, which shows how the city’s past is linked to people from beyond Ukraine.

The grounds are easy to walk through, with flat paths and a calm layout that lets visitors move between rows without crowding. Since this is a resting place for families and war dead, visitors should keep their voices low and avoid touching the fragile stones.

Hidden among the local graves is a single Commonwealth war burial for a soldier who died in May 1945, just days before the end of the fighting in Europe. Many visitors pass it without noticing that this one marker connects Odesa to a much wider story of wartime displacement.
