Kharkiv Arboretum, Protected area in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine
Kharkiv Arboretum is a protected garden area in the suburbs of Kharkiv featuring more than 900 tree and shrub species from Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and North America. Visitors walk through organized sections, each dedicated to different plant collections, with a rose garden and decorative pond among the main features.
The arboretum began in 1972 when an agricultural university moved its campus from the city center to the outskirts and started planting trees for educational purposes. Initial plantings of oaks and maples gradually expanded into the diverse collection seen today.
Visitors can watch students and researchers working among the plants, making it an active learning space for botany enthusiasts. The place serves as a hands-on classroom where practical knowledge about trees is shared openly.
Spring and summer are the best times to visit when plants are actively growing and the gardens are fully developed. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since you can cover several kilometers of pathways while exploring.
About four out of every five plants here come from elsewhere, including the Karelian birch from Siberia and Ginkgo biloba from East Asia. These foreign species receive special protection status under Ukrainian law.
