Kharkiv Oblast, Administrative region in eastern Ukraine.
Kharkiv Oblast is an administrative region in eastern Ukraine that borders Russia to the north and other Ukrainian territories to the south and east. The area includes open plains, river valleys and urban centers spread across several thousand square kilometers.
The area emerged as a military outpost in the 17th century and grew into an important center during early Soviet times. From 1919 to 1934, the capital of this region served as the capital of Soviet Ukraine, bringing considerable construction and industrial development.
The region takes its name from the city of Kharkiv, which served for decades as an administrative and educational center. Today visitors can see university buildings, theaters and research institutes that continue to serve as meeting points for academic and artistic life.
The network of rail lines and highways connects the larger towns and makes travel through the region manageable. Visitors looking to get their bearings can follow the main transport corridors that run north to south and east to west.
The area combines wide agricultural stretches with large engineering and metallurgy plants that exist side by side in the same landscape. This mix of rural farmland and industrial facilities shapes the appearance of many parts of the region.
