Monument to Artyom in Sviatohirsk, Memorial statue on Lysa Hill, Sviatohirsk, Ukraine
The Monument to Artyom in Sviatohirsk is a large concrete sculpture standing on the bank of the Siverskyi Donets River in eastern Ukraine. The figure rises from a hill called Lysa Hora and can be seen from several kilometers away, silhouetted against the sky.
The sculpture was erected in 1927 to honor Fyodor Sergeyev, a leader of the short-lived Donetsk-Kryvyi Rih Soviet Republic. Sergeyev died in 1921 in an accident involving an experimental railway wagon, just a few years after the civil war.
Sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze designed this monument in the cubist style, making it a significant example of early Soviet modernist architecture in Ukraine.
The hill can be reached by a path from the center of the town and offers a wide view over the river valley. The site is openly accessible, though the condition of the surroundings has been shaped by recent years.
Sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze designed this figure in a cubist style, making it a rare example of early Soviet modernism in Ukraine. In 2023, the work received a new official designation that emphasizes its artistic value more strongly.
