Sviatohirsk

The city extends along the banks of the Seversky Donets River, surrounded by chalk mountains and dense pine forests that create a particular microclimate.

The settlement originated in the 16th century and gained prominence with the establishment of the Sviatohirsk Lavra Holy Mountains monastery in 1624.

The Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra monastery stands as a central religious complex, featuring Byzantine architecture and underground temples carved into chalk cliffs.

Visitors can reach Sviatohirsk through regular bus connections from Donetsk or by taking direct trains from major Ukrainian cities.

The monastery contains a network of ancient caves where monks lived and prayed, including preserved underground chapels and living quarters carved into the mountains.
