Dormition Cathedral

The Dormition Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox church in Kharkiv that rises on a hill near the Lopan River. It features nine domes and is crowned by a 90-meter brick bell tower built in the Baroque style.

The structure started as a wooden church in 1657 and was later rebuilt in stone between 1685 and 1687. A fire in 1733 destroyed much of the building, but it was reconstructed to the form seen today.

The cathedral serves as a living place of worship for the local community and hosts classical music concerts in its interior. People gather here both for prayer and to listen to organ performances that fill the sacred space.

The site is open daily and allows visitors to observe religious services and study the architecture up close. Since it sits on a hilltop, there are steps leading to the entrance, so plan your approach accordingly.

The bell tower remained the tallest structure in the city from the 1800s through the early 21st century, making it a landmark that shaped the skyline for generations. This long prominence gives it special significance in the local memory.
