Kharkov Fortress, Military fortress in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
Kharkov Fortress is a 17th-century fortification in Kharkiv, Ukraine, built on a plateau between two rivers. It originally had ten watchtowers and was enclosed by a network of wooden walls and earthworks.
The fortress was built in 1654 by Russian soldiers and Cossack fighters as part of the Belgorod Line, a chain of fortifications meant to guard the southern border of the Tsardom. Over time it lost its military role and became the core around which the city of Kharkiv grew.
The fortress marks the beginning of Kharkiv, which grew from a military outpost into an educational hub. It shapes how residents today see their city as a place with deep historical roots.
Access to the site is currently very limited due to the ongoing military situation in the region, so it is important to check the security conditions before traveling. Anyone already in the area should follow local guidance and stay within any marked safe zones.
The builders used the two surrounding rivers as natural barriers and reinforced them with a system of moats dug around the walls. This combination of water and earth made the site one of the most defended points along the entire Belgorod Line.
