IT 8-bit, Computer museum in Mariupol, Ukraine
IT 8-bit was a computer museum in Mariupol that housed over 500 computing artifacts spanning decades of technological development. The collection included Soviet-era machines, gaming consoles, and equipment that documented the evolution of computing from the 1950s through the 2000s.
The museum was founded in August 2016 by Dmitry Cherepanov and accumulated its collection over nearly two decades. The collection was destroyed in 2022 during the siege of Mariupol.
The institution educated visitors about computing evolution through interactive displays and programs, drawing 1,500 annual visitors before the pandemic.
The museum maintained detailed documentation of its collection through social media, preserving digital records of computing history. These digital archives preserved valuable information about the collection even after physical destruction.
Before its destruction, the museum was recognized by Gizmodo for maintaining one of the largest collections of Soviet computing equipment in the world. This status made it a significant reference point for technology historians and collectors globally.
