Дом с ирисами, Art Nouveau mansion in Lukianivka district, Kyiv, Ukraine
The House with Irises is an early 20th-century residential building in Kyiv featuring asymmetrical design with bay windows and multiple balconies. The facade is defined by iris motifs decorating the entrance doors and ornamental iron railings on the balconies.
The building was constructed in the early 20th century for Nicolas Grabar, head of Kyiv District Court, and designed by engineer Vladimir Bezsmertny. Following Soviet nationalization in 1921, it was converted into rental apartments.
The building displays female mascarons above its entrance and ornamental iron railings on the balconies, reflecting the Art Nouveau movement. These decorative elements define the facade and make it a representative example of this architectural style.
The building sits in a residential neighborhood and is clearly visible from the street, where its architecture can be easily appreciated. Access to the interior is restricted as it remains a private residential property.
Writer Stepan Vasylchenko lived here from 1921 to 1932 after the Soviets nationalized the property. His residency documents how cultural figures experienced the changing living circumstances of that period.
