Danube Flotilla Monument

The Danube Flotilla Monument is a naval memorial on Nezalezhnosti Avenue made from metal, reinforced concrete, marble, and bronze materials. It displays an armored riverboat positioned on a wave-shaped foundation as its central design feature.

The monument commemorates the Danube Flotilla that defended Kherson in 1941, including the crew of armored boat No. 301 during military operations. After the war, an original warship recovered from the riverbed was restored at the Kherson Shipyard in 1976 following decades underwater.

The memorial reflects local identity and the memory of naval sacrifice, with inscriptions telling stories of defensive battles to visitors passing by. People use this space to remember those who served in river operations.

The memorial is accessible year-round and can be viewed from Nezalezhnosti Avenue without admission fees. Informational plaques on site provide details about its history, helping visitors understand what they are seeing.

The memorial incorporates not just a replica but an actual warship that rested on the riverbed for more than three decades before recovery. This original vessel was carefully raised and integrated into the monument as a permanent feature at that location.
