Taras Shevchenko Park, Historic park in Chernivtsi, Ukraine
Taras Shevchenko Park is a green space in central Chernivtsi with paved paths, ornamental trees, and flowerbeds arranged around a central fountain. Several entry points connect it to the surrounding streets, and benches are placed throughout the grounds.
The park was laid out in 1830 when Chernivtsi was part of the Austrian Empire, under the Duchy of Bukovina. The design from that period has largely survived to the present day.
The park takes its name from Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine's national poet, whose statue stands at the heart of the grounds. On Ukrainian national holidays, locals gather around it to lay flowers and mark the occasion together.
The park is free to enter and accessible every day, with multiple entry points from the surrounding streets. It sits in the city center, so public transport stops are within easy walking distance.
Several trees in the park are over 100 years old and were brought from Western Europe during the Austrian administration. Their presence turns the grounds into a kind of open-air record of that period.
