Château du Fleckenstein

Château du Fleckenstein is a medieval rock castle perched on a sandstone outcrop near Lembach with chambers carved directly into the stone. The structure features staircases, underground rooms, and remnants of water management systems built by its former inhabitants.

The fortress was built in the 12th century as a stronghold for the Fleckenstein family in a strategic border region. Over time it changed hands and lost its defensive role, eventually becoming a protected historical monument.

The castle carries the identity of the Fleckenstein family, whose presence shaped these spaces for generations. Visitors walk through rooms that reflect the daily lives and decisions of those who lived here.

Access is via hiking trails through the Northern Vosges or by car from nearby towns. Sturdy shoes are recommended since stone steps are steep and can be slippery.

The castle features a special challenge course called Château des Défis where visitors solve physical and mental puzzles while exploring the fortress. This interactive experience transforms a typical visit into an adventure that catches many visitors off guard.
