Coventry, Cathedral city in West Midlands, England.
Coventry is a city in the West Midlands in England that spreads across the River Sherbourne, showing medieval remains alongside postwar buildings. Two universities shape the urban layout, while several museums and shopping areas fill the center.
The city suffered heavy destruction during air raids in November 1940, reducing much of the center and the medieval cathedral to rubble. The reconstruction led to a modern cityscape with new streets and public buildings that shaped the postwar era.
The cathedral ruins stand beside the modern replacement built in the 1960s, drawing visitors who explore both structures during opening hours. Families and students gather in the pedestrian zones around Broadgate, while the cafés and shops reflect the rhythm of everyday life in the city.
The main railway station connects travelers to London in under an hour, while a dense bus network serves neighborhoods and surrounding towns. Most sights lie within walking distance in the center, and signposts help with orientation between the different quarters.
The transport museum holds the largest collection of British vehicles, including several record-breaking machines and early motorcycle prototypes from regional production. One section traces the development of vehicle manufacturing in the 20th century through original models and technical drawings.
