Talisker distillery, Scottish whisky distillery in Carbost, United Kingdom
Talisker is a distillery on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, located directly on the shore of Loch Harport in Carbost. The facility consists of several whitewashed buildings with red tile roofs, surrounded by low hills and dark rocky coastlines.
The distillery was founded in 1830 by the MacAskill brothers, who leased land from Clan MacLeod. A fire destroyed much of the facility in 1960, but it was fully rebuilt and expanded afterward.
The name comes from Gaelic and refers to the sloping rock formation near the shoreline of Loch Harport. Visitors watch copper stills through large viewing windows and experience how the surrounding landscape shapes the taste of the spirit.
Tours must be booked online in advance because spaces are limited and often unavailable at short notice. Children under eight cannot enter production areas but may stay in certain outdoor zones and the visitor center.
The water for production comes from a spring on the slope of Cnoc nan Speireag and flows through peat layers before reaching the distillery. This passage through peat gives the water traces of mineral elements that later appear in the flavor.
