River Trent, Major river system in Staffordshire, England.
The Trent runs for 185 miles from Biddulph Moor through the Midlands, flowing at first through steep terrain. Near Alrewas it reaches a broad floodplain and winds through meadows and fields until it meets the North Sea.
During the Pleistocene period the river flowed from Welsh hills to the North Sea and changed its path through ice ages. These shifts shaped the modern riverbed and created the broad valleys across the Midlands.
Rowing clubs and fishing spots line the banks, drawing people from across the region. On weekends you often see sailboats and rowing crews on the water, while anglers cast their lines at calmer sections.
Navigation reaches as far as Burton upon Trent, where you can walk along the canal towpaths. Several boat ramps and access points make it easier to launch along the course.
During spring tides near Cromwell Lock a tidal bore called the Eagre creates waves up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) high. This bore draws surfers and onlookers who want to watch the rare natural display.
