Highbury, Residential district in Islington, England
Highbury is a residential district in the northern part of Islington with rows of Victorian townhouses, tree-lined streets, and several parks scattered throughout the neighborhood. The area sits on gently rising ground, offering open views across surrounding rooftops and gardens in some spots.
A manor house on the hill gave the place its name in the fourteenth century, while residential development grew during the nineteenth century with the arrival of the railway. Much of the district was reshaped for housing in the twentieth century, though many of the older street patterns remained.
Arsenal Football Club operated in Highbury from 1913 to 2006, with the former stadium now transformed into residential apartments maintaining its art deco facade.
Highbury and Islington station connects several train and underground lines, making it easy to reach from the center or other parts of the city. Most streets are flat and easy to walk, while the parks stay open during daylight hours.
The former stadium was converted into a housing development after its closure, preserving parts of the old facade and tracing the original footprint in the street layout. Some of the earlier stand names still appear on the new buildings.
