Musselburgh, Market town on the Firth of Forth, Scotland
Musselburgh is a coastal town along the Firth of Forth divided by the River Esk into eastern and western sections. Historic bridges link the two parts together, forming the spine of the town's layout.
Roman soldiers built a fort near the River Esk around 80 CE to control the eastern approach to Scotland. This outpost later became the foundation for growth into a trading center.
The name comes from Old English and refers to the shellfish beds that once lined the Firth of Forth's shore. The waterfront and river mouth still shape how locals and visitors experience the place today.
The town sits about five miles east of Edinburgh with straightforward rail access. You'll find shops, restaurants, and a few small museums scattered throughout, making it easy to explore on foot.
Musselburgh Links has been played continuously for over 350 years, making it one of the world's oldest golf courses still in use. The course shares space with a working racecourse, creating an unusual layout where golfers and horse racing coexist.
