Amersham, Market town in Chiltern Hills, England
Amersham is a market town in the Chiltern Hills, Buckinghamshire, England, made up of two separate areas. Old Amersham sits in the Misbourne Valley with old brick houses and narrow lanes, while Amersham-on-the-Hill grew around the railway station.
The settlement appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 under the name Agmodesham and belonged to Geoffrey de Mandeville at the time. In the Middle Ages the place received market rights, which helped its growth as a trading center.
The settlement preserves a long market tradition, visible in the layout of streets and buildings along the main road. Many residents today still use the old inns and shops that continue to define the townscape.
The Metropolitan Line underground ends at the station and connects directly with central London in about an hour's ride. The A413 road leads to the M25 motorway and makes arriving by car easier.
A row of historic inns lines the main street, including several with timber framing from the 16th century. The buildings often served as backdrops for film and television productions seeking a rural English setting.
