River Tyne, River in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, England.

The River Tyne is a waterway in northeast England that flows through Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, formed where the North Tyne and South Tyne meet at Warden Rock near Hexham. The course winds through rural valleys and industrial areas before reaching the North Sea at Tynemouth.

The Romans built bridges across the river and erected forts along its banks to defend their northern frontier. Later, coal barges carried black cargo downriver for centuries until mining largely ended in the 1980s.

The river takes its name from a Celtic word meaning stream and has shaped the identity of people along its banks for centuries. Anglers and boaters now use quieter stretches while walkers along the riverside paths experience the connection between towns.

Riverside paths work well for walking and cycling, with access varying at different points along the river. During high water, some lower sections may flood, so checking conditions beforehand helps.

Salmon sculptures line parts of the banks and mark the migration routes of fish returning to the river after decades of absence. Water quality has improved so much that dozens of species now live in the river again.
