Basildon, New town in Essex, England
Basildon is a town in southeastern Essex that combines housing estates, industrial parks, and shopping areas linked by main roads and bypasses. Green corridors separate the neighborhoods and provide open space throughout the built-up area.
The town was created starting in 1949 under Britain's program to build new communities after the Second World War. Four rural settlements were combined into a single urban area during this process.
The Towngate Theatre presents local performances throughout the year while the Sporting Village provides athletic facilities for community activities and professional training.
Three railway stations on the line to London Fenchurch Street connect the town to the capital in around 35 minutes of travel time. Buses run between residential areas and the town center throughout the day.
The industrial area was developed in the first years after the town was founded and attracted companies from London. Today thousands of people work in these factories and warehouses along the eastern edge of the town.
