Southall, Multicultural district in West London, Great Britain
Southall is a district in the London Borough of Ealing in the west of the city, known for its South Asian community. The High Street and Broadway run parallel and form the center with grocery stores, clothing shops, and restaurants.
After World War II, immigrants from India and Pakistan settled in the area to work in nearby factories and at Heathrow Airport. The former rural community developed into an urban center during the 1950s and 1960s with a growing population.
The Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha displays white marble domes and courtyards where visitors are welcome. Many shops along the main road carry signs in Punjabi and sell traditional spices, fabrics, and jewelry.
Southall Railway Station sits at the eastern edge of the district and offers connections to Paddington Station in about 30 minutes. Several bus lines run through the area and stop along the main roads, which are easy to explore on foot.
The area holds more than ten gurdwaras, several Hindu temples, mosques, and Christian churches within a small radius. On some weekends, Bollywood music plays from shops while street stalls offer freshly prepared street food.
