London Borough of Ealing, Administrative district in West London, England
The London Borough of Ealing is an administrative district in western London that covers seven main neighborhoods: Acton, Ealing, Greenford, Hanwell, Northolt, Perivale, and Southall. The area stretches from the River Brent in the north down to the Thames in the south, made up of a mix of residential zones, green spaces, and local shopping streets.
The area formed in 1965 when three former municipalities merged: Ealing, Acton, and Southall, all previously part of Middlesex. This change was part of a larger reorganization that dissolved Middlesex county and transferred its territory to Greater London.
The name comes from the Old English word for "sons of Gilla," reflecting Saxon settlement patterns visible in parish boundaries and street layouts. Daily life here mixes commuter routines with a strong South Asian community in Southall, where markets and shops line the main road.
The district is well connected by several Underground and rail lines that offer direct links into central London. Most residential neighborhoods are walkable, with local parks and shopping streets near each station.
Ealing Studios within the district is recognized as the oldest continuously operating film studio in the world, producing many classic British comedies. The facility remains active today and regularly attracts productions from around the world.
