St Davids, Cathedral city in Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom.
St Davids is a small city in Pembrokeshire set on a hillside along the western coast of Wales. Stone houses line narrow lanes, while galleries and shops fill the streets around the center.
In the sixth century monks founded an abbey here, which gradually grew into a settlement. The British crown recognized the place as a city only in the late twentieth century.
The place takes its name from the patron saint of Wales, and pilgrims arrive here today as they did centuries ago. On holidays locals gather at the church and on the small market square at the center.
Buses connect the place regularly with the nearest railway stations about an hour away. Walking paths lead from the center to the coast and to neighboring villages through open countryside.
The cathedral sits in a valley below the city level, so its towers are not immediately visible from the higher center. You reach it through a medieval gate that marks the descent toward the riverbank.
