Farnborough, Administrative town in Rushmoor, England
Farnborough is an administrative town in Rushmoor, Hampshire, situated at 65 meters (213 feet) above sea level and including several shopping districts with retail parks and covered centers. The built-up areas alternate with parks and open spaces that lie between residential and commercial neighborhoods.
In 1801, only 1,366 people lived here in a small rural settlement. Rapid growth during the 19th century brought over 39,000 residents by 1901 and transformed the place into a major urban center.
The name comes from Old English "Ferneberga," meaning fern hill, which reflects the original landscape of the area. Today the central district serves as a meeting point for shopping and errands, with many locals using the surrounding green spaces for walks.
The center offers many parking spaces near the Princes Mead and Queensmead shopping centers, along with covered and uncovered bicycle storage. Most shops and facilities are within walking distance, and the area works well for errands over half a day.
The airport houses the headquarters of the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, which examines aircraft incidents across the entire United Kingdom. A market takes place twice a week, and from March to December monthly craft fairs bring together local artisans.
