Nantucket

Nantucket is an Atlantic island located 30 miles south of Cape Cod, covering 45 square miles, with sand beaches, coastal trails, and historic residential buildings. Low hills cross the interior, while narrow streets wind through compact town centers with cobblestone sidewalks and wooden fences.

Between 1659 and 1850, the land evolved into North America's leading whaling port, sending vessels across oceans to hunt whales for oil production. Economic decline followed as petroleum replaced whale oil markets and many residents departed for other regions.

The Whaling Museum displays maritime objects, including a 46-foot sperm whale skeleton, and documents the seafaring tradition through exhibits and galleries. Fishermen and boat owners still maintain their connection to the sea, while summer sailing regattas bring activity to the shoreline.

Visitors reach the land through regular ferry connections from Hyannis or flights from Boston, New York, and other northeastern cities. Bicycles work well for traveling along flat routes, while central areas remain easy to cover on foot.

Preservation rules protect over 800 structures built before 1850, forming a collection of brick and wooden buildings with period architectural details. Gas lamps still line several central streets and are lit by hand each evening.
