Brant Point Light, Wooden lighthouse at Nantucket Harbor entrance, US
Brant Point Light is a wooden lighthouse at the entrance to Nantucket Harbor on the Massachusetts coast. The white cylindrical structure with a black lantern room sits on wooden pilings over the water and connects to shore by a footbridge.
The first lighthouse station at this location was established in 1746 following requests from sea captains. The current structure dates from 1901 and replaced several earlier buildings.
The lighthouse is a familiar landmark for sailors approaching the harbor and shapes the character of Nantucket's waterfront. Visitors can see how the island has remained connected to the sea across generations.
The structure operates with a Fresnel lens and sends out a red light that is visible in clear weather. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since access is via a narrow footbridge and the surroundings can be wet and slippery.
Nine different lighthouses stood at this location before the current structure, destroyed by fires, storms, or structural failures. These repeated disasters show how challenging it was to build a stable lighthouse in shallow water.
