Balquhain Castle, Medieval tower house ruins in Chapel of Garioch, Scotland.
Balquhain Castle is a medieval tower house ruin located in Chapel of Garioch, featuring a four-sided stone structure surrounded by a defensive wall enclosure. The building displays typical Scottish fortress features with narrow loops for weapons and deep recesses built into its thick stone walls.
The Leslie family built the fortress during the 14th century, with four masons contracted in 1441 to expand the construction work. The stronghold later became involved in major regional conflicts during the 16th century.
Mary Queen of Scots selected this fortress as her temporary residence in 1562 before proceeding to the Battle of Corrichie against the Gordon clan.
The ruins are located west of Inverurie and visible from the surrounding landscape, though private ownership may restrict access to the site. Visitors should check in advance whether entry is permitted since it is a protected archaeological location.
The structure includes a barmkin wall enclosure and deep recesses with narrow loops, demonstrating medieval Scottish defensive architecture techniques.
