Bank and Monument stations, Underground transport hub in City of London, United Kingdom
Bank and Monument is an underground transport hub beneath London's financial district served by five Underground lines and the Docklands Light Railway. The complex connects multiple station levels through escalators, lifts, and moving walkways.
The first section opened in 1884 as Eastcheap station and was later renamed Monument, while Bank station began operations in 1900 near the Bank of England. The two stations gradually expanded into a major transportation hub over the following decades.
The station names come from the Bank of England headquarters and the Monument that marks the Great Fire of London. Travelers moving through the complex pass these two important locations that shaped the district's identity.
The complex has sixteen entrances and five ticket halls that allow visitors to choose different access points and routes. During busy periods, individual entrances can get crowded, so it helps to try another entrance if queues are long.
During renovations between 2016 and 2023, engineers expanded the station capacity while keeping trains running and serving millions of passengers without major disruptions. This modernization helps the complex handle the intense daily flow of travelers.
