Dover, Capital city in Delaware, United States.
Dover is the capital city of the state of Delaware and sits in Kent County at roughly 11 meters (36 feet) above sea level, with government buildings, residential neighborhoods, and wide avenues running through it. The town spreads around a central green square from which tree-lined streets with brick structures and modern administrative facilities branch out in all directions.
The settlement was founded in 1683 following an order by William Penn to establish a court town and developed into a local administrative center. In 1777, the town became the capital of Delaware after the previous capital New Castle faced threats from British troops.
The town center forms around The Green, an open square where colonial structures from the late 1700s stand and serve today for public gatherings and walks. Visitors regularly see residents strolling the pathways along the historic facades or resting on benches beneath old trees.
The downtown area can be explored on foot, with most points of interest reachable within a few blocks. Parking is available along streets and in public lots near the government district, which tends to be busiest during weekday hours.
Dover Air Force Base sits at the eastern edge of town and serves as a major military installation, with large cargo aircraft regularly visible flying over the surrounding area. The Delaware Agricultural Museum preserves farm buildings and equipment from different eras, showing how rural work looked in the region in earlier times.
