New York Stewart International Airport, International airport in Orange County, United States
New York Stewart International Airport serves as a commercial and military facility in the Hudson Valley, approximately 60 miles (97 kilometers) north of Manhattan. The site includes two parallel asphalt runways, with the longer one measuring about 11,800 feet (3.6 kilometers) to handle large passenger and cargo aircraft.
Operations began in the years following 1934 as a training ground for military pilots from West Point, before the facility expanded after World War II. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took over management in the mid-2000s and opened the site to scheduled flights.
In 1981, the airport received 52 American citizens returning from Iran, leading to the designation of their route to West Point as Freedom Road.
Several car rental agencies and shuttle services connect the terminal to nearby hotels and towns, and parking is available directly at the departure terminal. Travelers should arrive early, as security lines can grow longer during peak travel times in spring and fall.
The site maintains its own fire station and medical facility on the grounds, available to both civilian passengers and military aircraft. Parts of the old military buildings still stand beside the modern terminal, showing the long history as a training base.
