University of Iowa, Public research university in Iowa City, United States.
The University of Iowa is a public research institution in Iowa City spread across a sprawling campus with lecture halls, laboratories, clinics, and dormitories lining both sides of the Iowa River. The grounds divide into east and west sections connected by bridges, with medical facilities occupying the western side.
The site opened for instruction in 1847, just one year after Iowa gained statehood, and welcomed both men and women through its doors from the start. The medical college followed in 1870 and later moved across the river into newly constructed clinics.
The institution's name reflects its public foundation, created to bring education within reach of ordinary families across the state. Visitors see students moving between classes, gathering in campus cafeterias, or studying on lawns beside the river throughout the day.
The grounds are easy to walk through, with marked paths and covered walkways connecting major buildings. Parking is available at several locations on the edge of the grounds, though the central area is best explored on foot.
The Old Capitol Building on the grounds served as the seat of state government between 1846 and 1857, before Des Moines became the capital. Today it houses a museum and stands as a gold-domed landmark at the heart of campus.
