Blacksburg, University town in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States
Blacksburg is a town in Montgomery County, Virginia, spreading across residential areas, commercial zones, and the grounds of Virginia Tech. Streets run partly flat in the center and climb slopes where neighborhoods and the campus with brick buildings spread out.
Samuel Black purchased land in this area in the late 18th century, and his sons later laid out streets and divided plots for houses. The settlement grew slowly until the polytechnic institute was founded and the population increased.
Students shape the character of the town, and during the academic year cafés and small shops downtown fill with young people from many countries. This mix brings events where locals and students meet and different traditions become visible.
Buses run regularly between campus and downtown, and weekday traffic is busiest when classes start or end. Visitors walking should note that some streets climb steeply and sidewalks are not everywhere.
The town sits over 2000 feet (about 610 meters) high in the Appalachian range, which brings mild summers and cool winters. This location attracts hikers and cyclists who find many trails through forested hills nearby.
