Central Michigan University, Public research university in Mount Pleasant, United States
Central Michigan University is a public research university in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, educating more than 14,000 students across 194 hectares (480 acres). The site includes modern lecture halls, research facilities, 21 residence halls, and the Charles V. Park Library with roughly one million books and 2,600 study spaces.
The institution opened in 1892 as a private normal school with 31 students in the Carpenter Building and became a state institution three years later. Over the 20th century, it grew from teacher training programs to offer 200 courses across eight academic divisions.
The Charles V. Park Library serves as a central gathering spot where students from all disciplines work and research together. The arrangement of residence halls by academic focus encourages conversation among students and shapes daily life on campus.
Access to the library is open to all students and offers different learning environments from quiet individual desks to group rooms. The location of residence halls near faculty buildings shortens walks to lectures and seminars.
The university uses the athletic nickname Chippewas in reference to the original inhabitants of the region. The Carpenter Building, the first instructional building, still stands today and serves as a visible link to the founding era.
