Buena Vista

Buena Vista is an independent city in Virginia situated between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Maury River. The city occupies a compact area shaped by its riverside location and surrounding mountain landscape.

Originally called Hart's Bottom, the city received its charter in 1890 and became independent in 1892 after iron ore deposits were discovered. This growth transformed it from a small settlement into a chartered municipality.

The downtown historic district preserves buildings from different periods that shape how the city looks and feels today. Walking through these streets, you notice how the older structures define the character of the place.

The city is surrounded by mountains and shaped by the river, with a levee and walking trail providing flood protection and access to the waterfront. The compact size makes it easy to explore on foot.
