Falls Church, Independent city in Northern Virginia, United States.
Falls Church is an independent city in northern Virginia that covers a compact area located just a few kilometers from the capital Washington. The streets form a grid connecting residential areas with commercial districts, with trees shaping the cityscape and public facilities within easy reach.
The settlement grew around a church building erected in 1734 that later gave the community its name. In 1948 the place gained status as an independent city and separated administratively from surrounding Fairfax County.
The community takes its name from a colonial church that still stands as a landmark and served as a recruitment station during the Revolutionary War. Visitors can walk through residential streets and see homes from different eras, while small businesses in the center maintain a neighborly character.
The city is easy to cross on foot or by bicycle, as most destinations lie within short distances. Visitors can explore shops and restaurants along main streets, while residential areas allow for quiet walks.
With a total area of less than 6 square kilometers (2.1 square miles), this place is the smallest independent administrative unit in the state. Despite its small size, the city operates its own school system with several facilities that is known nationwide for its performance.
