Newark, University city in New Castle County, Delaware
Newark is a university city in New Castle County, Delaware, covering 24 square kilometers with gentle hills and creek valleys. Iron Hill Park borders the southern side while White Clay Creek State Park defines the northern edge, both offering trails and open grass areas.
Scottish and Welsh settlers founded the town in 1694, and King George II granted it an official charter in 1758. The university began in 1743 as a small academy and expanded during the 20th century into a regional campus with research facilities.
The University of Delaware shapes the center with residence halls, lecture buildings and a wide Main Street lined with bookshops and cafés. On weekends during the semester, lawns fill with young people while graduates and professors walk through quiet residential streets with front porches.
The Christina School District manages public education while the university offers higher education programs in business and engineering. Visitors can walk through the campus on footpaths or reach the parks at the town edges by bicycle.
The Battle of Cooch's Bridge near the town marked the first documented use of the Stars and Stripes flag in American military combat in 1777. Today a memorial stone recalls this episode while cyclists ride on marked paths through the area, classified as a bicycle-friendly community since the 2010s.
