Highland Park, Residential community in Lake County, Illinois, United States.
Highland Park is a residential community in Lake County, Illinois, that spreads between Lake Michigan and inland areas. The streets run through several neighborhoods with homes from different decades, small commercial strips, and green spaces distributed across gentle hills.
The settlement started in 1869 as farmland and transformed in the following decades through rail connections and arrivals from Chicago into a residential community. After World War II the place grew further and attracted families wanting to live outside the city center.
The Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve at the southern edge protects old-growth trees and prairie remnants from before settlement and now draws walkers throughout the week. Families gather there on weekends under tall oaks while running groups use the loop trails and dogs play on the open grass.
Visitors reach the place via regional roads from nearby Chicago or from the north and find parking along main streets and at public buildings. Most facilities sit within short distances from each other and are easy to reach on foot or by car.
The Rosewood Beach along the shore offers public access to Lake Michigan with a small sandy stretch and views across the open water. Few outsiders know this area also allows quiet lakeside walks in fall and spring when waves break against the stones.
