Canonsburg, Borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States
Canonsburg is a town in Washington County, Pennsylvania, located about 18 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. The settlement includes residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and a few industrial sites spread along the main roads and around the old town center.
A colonel named John Canon founded the settlement in 1789 and sold land to newcomers. The town was officially incorporated in 1802 and grew during the 19th and early 20th centuries through coal mining and steel production.
The name honors John Canon, a colonel who owned land here in the late 18th century and sold parcels to early settlers. The town long served as a hub for coal miners and steel workers, who shopped along Main Street after their shifts and gathered in the local taverns.
Interstate 79 and U.S. Route 19 run through the area, linking the town to Pittsburgh and other neighboring communities. Visitors who walk around will find shops and restaurants along the main street, while the residential blocks tend to be quiet and spread out.
Two major manufacturers run factories here: a candy company that produces chocolate and confections, and a firm that makes high-end metal cookware. Both sell their products nationwide and employ part of the local population.
