Located in central Hoke County, Raeford spans 4.3 square miles with Rockfish Creek forming its northeastern border along the Cape Fear River system.
The city's name originated from John McRae and A.A. Williford, who operated a turpentine distillery and general store in the early settlement period.
Highland Scot families established strong roots in the Upper Cape Fear Valley, while Lumbee Indian families from Robeson County later added to the population diversity.
U.S. Route 401 connects Raeford to Fayetteville and Laurinburg, providing convenient access to larger metropolitan areas in North Carolina.
The McLauchlin-McFadyen House, now home to the Raeford-Hoke Museum, preserves local artifacts and documents from the early 1900s.
