Moline, Industrial city in Rock Island County, Illinois, United States
Moline is a city on the Mississippi River in Illinois that forms the Quad Cities region together with Rock Island, East Moline, Davenport, and Bettendorf. The area spreads across both banks of the river and connects Illinois to Iowa through several bridges.
The settlement began in the 1840s as a mill site powered by the river. Later the city became a center for farm machinery manufacturing, which continues to shape the local economy today.
The name comes from the French word for mill, a reminder of the waterpower that once drove local industry. Today this industrial past appears in the brick buildings along the riverfront, where warehouses have been converted into homes and shops.
Access is provided by several highways running through the city that ease connections within the region. The river bridges allow direct crossings between Illinois and Iowa without long detours.
A well-known architect designed a major farm equipment company headquarters in the 1960s, now considered an example of modern corporate architecture. The building sits on a large site and uses steel and glass as primary materials.
