Quarters One

Quarters One is an Italianate mansion at Rock Island Arsenal containing 51 rooms spread across approximately 22,000 square feet of space. The building ranks as the second-largest federal residence after the White House and dominates the arsenal grounds with its architectural presence.

Construction began in 1870 under General Thomas Rodman and was completed in 1872. The building served as a residence for commanding officers of the arsenal and remained a key facility on the grounds for many decades.

The residence hosted many prominent visitors throughout its history and reflects its role as housing for top military officers. The grand rooms and decorations show how important this place was in military affairs.

The building sits on Rock Island Arsenal grounds and can be reached by several road approaches to the facility. Visitors should locate the arsenal first and then navigate to the residence location, as this provides the most reliable route.
