Hillside, Georgian mansion in Davenport, United States.
Hillside is a brick mansion built on a limestone foundation overlooking the Mississippi River from a hilltop location in Davenport. The structure features Georgian architectural elements including projecting semicircular bays and rectangular pavilions at each of its four corners.
The residence was built between 1905 and 1906 for Charles Schuler, a coal merchant and businessman. Architect Frederick G. Clausen designed the house during an era when Davenport was expanding through industrial and commercial growth.
The interior shows fine craftsmanship typical of upper-class homes from that era, with original stained glass windows, three fireplaces, and detailed mahogany woodwork throughout the rooms. These elements reflect how affluent families lived and valued quality materials in their private spaces.
The house sits on a corner lot atop a bluff with open views of the Mississippi River below. Visitors approaching from the south can use the covered portico, while those from other directions will find the elevated position and terracing shape how you move around the property.
The south-facing porch features handcrafted mosaic tile floors, a striking decorative detail that shows the attention paid to outdoor spaces. This level of artisanal work in a porch setting was less common than interior embellishments during this period.
