Ashland, Industrial city in Boyd County, Kentucky
Ashland sits on the Ohio River at an elevation of 168 meters (551 feet) and includes residential districts mixed with commercial zones and green areas. Streets run inland from the waterfront, with the settlement spreading across gentle hills and flat terrain.
The settlement began in 1786 during the western expansion, when pioneers established trades near the river routes. In the 19th century the town grew into a center for iron processing and raw material shipping.
The city features Central Park, a public green space with walking trails and picnic facilities that residents use for family gatherings and outdoor activities. On summer evenings people often gather in parks along the riverfront to watch the view across to Ohio.
Several bus routes connect residential areas to downtown, and the Amtrak station on Carter Avenue offers regular train service. Most public buildings and parks are reachable on foot or by bicycle from main streets.
The Paramount Arts Center occupies a restored 1930s theater building and preserves the original ceiling murals and stage curtains. Visitors can join guided tours that show the building's original architecture.
