Puente Blanco

Puente Blanco spans the Quebrada Mala Canyon with a white reinforced concrete arch design that rises prominently above the gorge. The structure was engineered to carry heavy rail traffic across this natural gap.

The bridge was built in 1922 and replaced an earlier steel structure from 1907 as the railway network expanded across the island. It became a key link connecting different regions of Puerto Rico.

The structure reflects local engineering expertise and the skill of Puerto Rican professionals in the early 1900s. It demonstrates how local engineers brought modern technology and methods to their region.

The structure is visible from nearby roads, but the terrain around it is difficult to access and the surrounding landscape is wild. Visiting requires preparation and sturdy hiking boots.

The white color was chosen to keep the structure visible in the tropical environment and help it stay cooler. This distinctive feature makes it stand out against the surrounding mountain landscape.
