Arkham is a fictional city in Essex County, Massachusetts, on the banks of the Miskatonic, with colonial buildings in dark timber and steep gable roofs. Narrow lanes run through the old center and lead to university buildings in brick and weathered stone, while the river flows past the eastern side of town.
The settlement was established in 1639 and grew over centuries around the harbor and trade routes along the Miskatonic. In the 17th century, local witch trials took place that remain in collective memory today, accompanied by tales of supernatural incidents.
The name Arkham derives from colonial times and appears in documents alongside other river settlements that preserve their English roots. Local events and academic gatherings around the university draw visitors who walk through the historic quarters with cobblestone streets and old trading houses.
The town center is easy to explore on foot, with university buildings near the riverfront and accessible from the main streets. Visitors should note that certain areas of the university library and archives remain outside public access zones.
