Agassiz Rock

Agassiz Rock is a protected area in Manchester-by-the-Sea featuring two large granite monoliths that rise prominently above the surrounding forest. These rock formations create a distinctive natural landmark in the local terrain.

The site was originally named after naturalist Louis Agassiz but was renamed The Monoliths in 2022. This change reflected evolving values regarding historical accuracy and representation.

The site functions as a learning resource where visitors can observe the direct effects of glacial activity on the New England landscape.

Access to this location is through marked hiking trails that begin from the parking area on School Street. Sturdy footwear is recommended since trails traverse wooded terrain.

The granite formations display clear striations and scratches that mark the direction of ancient glacial movement across Massachusetts. These visible marks serve as natural records of the region's ice age history.
