Hammond Castle, Medieval castle in Gloucester, Massachusetts
Hammond Castle is a castle in Gloucester, Massachusetts, standing on a rocky cliff overlooking the harbor and combining architectural styles from different European periods. The structure features stone walls, arched doorways, and characteristic towers that give the building the appearance of an authentic medieval fortress.
Inventor John Hays Hammond Jr., who held over 400 patents, built this castle between 1926 and 1929 to house his collection of medieval artifacts. The building embodies his passion for history and his work during the early years of radio technology.
The castle displays an extensive collection of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance artifacts throughout its rooms. A large pipe organ housed within the halls is regularly used for concerts performed by professional musicians.
The castle welcomes visitors during the season and offers guided tours that explain the architecture, history, and technical innovations of its owner. The location on a rocky outcrop means there are stairs to navigate, but the harbor view is visible from many parts of the building.
The castle was built by a radio pioneer who equipped it with innovative technologies reflecting his early work in wireless communication and broadcasting. Many visitors do not realize that the various European architectural elements were intentionally selected from different centuries to create historical variety.
