Beauport, National Historic Landmark on Eastern Point Boulevard, Gloucester, United States.
Beauport is a 56-room home on Gloucester's rocky coastline with views overlooking the harbor and open ocean. The rooms are filled with architectural elements, collected furnishings, and ceramics that reflect different historical styles and periods.
Henry Davis Sleeper created this summer retreat in 1908 as an expression of his design sensibility and appreciation for craftsmanship. The McCann family acquired the property in the 1940s and added to its collections.
Each room follows a different theme and shows how wealthy people in the early 1900s lived and decorated their homes. The furnishings reflect the travels and interests that shaped the owners' lives.
The house opens as a museum with guided tours leading through the rooms and surrounding gardens. Expect narrow hallways and multiple staircases since the building expanded gradually over many decades.
The house was built as a living expression of Sleeper's personal taste, with each room serving as an experiment in different design approaches. This arrangement feels more like a collector's visual diary than a conventional home.
