Bakers Island Light, Historical lighthouse on Bakers Island, Salem, United States.
Bakers Island Light is a white conical tower standing 18 meters tall above Salem Sound, topped with a black lantern room for signaling passing vessels. Its stone construction and simple design have marked the entrance to this coastal area for nearly two centuries.
The first light station was built here in 1791 with two lamps on a keeper's dwelling, then rebuilt in 1820 as the round stone tower standing today. This structure has guided countless vessels through Salem Sound for the past two centuries.
The lighthouse embodies local maritime heritage and was once essential for fishermen and traders navigating these waters. Visitors can still sense this seafaring past when approaching the island to view the tower.
The lighthouse is only accessible by boat from Salem Ferry Dock, typically through organized tour boats that operate during summer months. The short boat ride makes it easy to visit and get close views of the tower.
The lighthouse once had a shorter companion tower on the island nicknamed 'Pa Baker,' while this one was called 'Ma Baker' by locals. The pair operated together until the smaller tower was taken down in 1926, leaving the larger one as a solo sentinel.
