Herreshoff Castle, Gothic residence in Marblehead, United States.
Herreshoff Castle is a stone residence in Marblehead featuring Gothic arched windows, wooden doors, and multiple turrets set on a coastal property. The structure includes climbing ivy covering parts of the walls and several chimneys built into the stonework.
Waldo Ballard and Joanna McCoy built the structure in 1920 taking design inspiration from a Viking property in Greenland. The property changed hands in 1945 when Francis Herreshoff purchased it.
The building combines medieval European design elements with New England residential styles, showing how American owners in the 1920s adapted Gothic architecture to a coastal setting. This blend shapes how the house looks and feels today.
The carriage house on the grounds operates as overnight lodging from May through November. Guests staying there can tour the main building and its great hall during their visit.
From the copper-roofed tower, views extend from Boston Light in the south to Magnolia shore in the north, taking in Marblehead Neck and the harbor. This vantage point reveals the entire coastal landscape at once.
